Welcome back to another episode of The TeamBuildr Podcast! This week our guest is Ryan Gallop, the director of performance at NAKOA Performance and Physical Therapy. Typically we only hear about the strength and conditioning coaches of your traditional sports; football, basketball, lacrosse, etc. but Ryan here is a strength and conditioning coach for action sports; surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding - which you really don't hear about all that often, hence why we wanted to chat with him!
In this episode, you'll get to hear how Ryan got into training action sport athletes, his experience with extremely cold ice baths to help with stress management, and how he is still able to keep up with young guys on his rugby team.
[Last summer] I was 39 and I'd say 85% of the rest of the team was 25 or younger and that's where like the training preparation and knowing how to recover is extremely important when you're an old geezer trying to run around with them. I mean, half the team was only a couple years out of college. Luckily, I'm old enough and crafty enough, I've held on to a little bit of my fast twitch so that I can hang with them.
Ryan has been training athletes for about 17 years now, most notably with the USA Men's Rugby Sevens and many professional sport athletes in surfing, skating, BMX, snowboarding. He puts a lot of emphasis on the mental side of performance coaching like stress management and breathing techniques which always makes a coach unique to us.
If you want to learn about surfing and rugby, Ryan is your guy. Enjoy the episode and subscribe to get the latest and greatest right when it drops!
